What do we most Need? (pt 2)
• Series: Family Culture
#1: We need a new Center John 17:3 2 Corinthians 3:18 Summary: Your center is the weightiest thing in your life, just like the sun in our solar system. Your center gives meaning to your life. It’s what your life revolves around. Jesus says our new center must be knowing God as He really is. Example: Jacob in the book of Genesis. #2: We need a new Fear Proverbs 1:7 Luke 12:1-7 Summary: Our fears can show us what we value. In our flesh, we fear worldly things like rejection, financial ruin, and loss. Jesus doesn’t say that fear, in and of itself, is bad. He says we must learn to have a worshipful fear of God. Above all else, we should fear living to please the wrong audience. #3: We need a new Life 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Summary: We are not our own. We were bought by the blood of Jesus, and we are a temple of the Holy Spirit. Just like running in the Olympics, we are representing someone else. We need to have a healthy relationship with ourselves, a healthy relationship with others, and to know our direction. Our life is not lived according to us, but according to God’s wisdom. #4: We need a new Love Romans 5:6-10 Summary: God loved you and loves you at your worst. He has concretely expressed His love to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, His Son. God’s love for us in the Gospel is our daily spiritual bread. We look to the cross and resurrection – and this gives us the assurance we need to get a new center, have a new fear, and live a new life. Sample questions for GCs: Center – What is your center right now? What does your life seem to revolve around? Is it knowing God as He really is, or something else? Like Jacob, are you trying to make something other than God your center? Where in your life do you need to be wrestling with God and fighting to hold onto Him more passionately? Fear – What have you been fearing lately? Which of your fears are worldly and which of them are godly? What do your fears tell you about what you are valuing right now? Are your fears leading you toward living to please the eyes of God or the eyes of others? Life – When do you tend to forget that you don’t own yourself? You are a temple of the Holy Spirit: How should you feel about that? Are you running in a good direction or a little aimlessly? Love – How does it make you feel to know that God loved you and loves you at your worst? Do you look to the cross to see God’s love for you, or do you look at how your life is going at the moment? Do you treasure the Gospel often enough? Does God’s love for you feel real right now? Why or why not?
