Healthy authority in God’s household: 1.) Character 2.) Culture 3.) Calling Titus 1:5-9 1 Peter 5:1-11 Questions: 1.) Read Titus 1:5-8. Our character is who we are. Our competency is what we can do. Sometimes a church can be very "successful" with highly competent leaders who lack character, but can a church be healthy with highly competent leaders who lack character? Why or why not? Discuss the various character qualifications listed. 2.) Read 1 Peter 5:1-11. In this passage Peter describes the role of an elder. Elders lead out in forming the culture of a church. This passage doesn't say that elders must be dynamic, charismatic, or powerful public speakers. Discuss what Peter does say about elders. How does this inform your view of what a healthy church should look like? 3.) According to these passages, is church leadership a "choose your own adventure" matter, or does the Bible give some specific instruction on how church leaders should lead? When churches search for a pastor, why do so many look for charismatic and dynamic leaders, rather than steady shepherds?
