Why care about Doctrine? (pt 1)

 • Series: The Heart of Our Faith

#1: The problem with competing principles (Luke 24:13-24) These two disciples in Luke chapter 24 were treating doctrine as a set of competing principles. They were discouraged and confused. When we treat the Bible like a big pile of historical facts and old stories, and just go looking for little nuggets of truth in it, we miss the point. Doctrine is not about a bunch of abstract principles. Doctrine is deeply personal. #2: The power of a consistent Person (Luke 24:25-27) Jesus told these men something astounding: “He interpreted for them the things concerning HIMSELF in ALL the Scriptures.” The whole Bible points to Jesus. The Bible is the inspired Word of God, and it’s not designed to just give us a set of principles. It’s designed to invite us into an intimate relationship with God through His Son, Jesus Christ. All doctrine flows from the Person of God. We don’t develop good doctrine by thinking it out on our own, instead we observe God. We see Him in His Word, and all of our doctrine flows from seeing and knowing Him. #3: When doctrine flows in your veins (Luke 24:28-32) These men experienced a “burning” in their hearts when they finally understood that the whole Bible, and therefore all doctrine, points to and is fulfilled by Jesus Christ. When Christ-centered doctrine is driven deep into our hearts, it changes us because we begin burning for God’s presence and glory. (Listen to the sermon to see how this can be applied to the story of David and Goliath) Sample Questions for GCs: #1: Read Luke 24:21. We could say that these two disciples knew the Bible, and yet, they didn’t actually know it. In other words, even though they studied it and could talk about it, they didn’t actually understand that all of it was pointing them to deep relationship with God through Jesus. Discuss this question: If someone knows a lot about the Bible, but they don’t have a real love for God, do you think they really understand the Bible? Why or why not? #2: Read Luke 24:27. This verse really is amazing! Jesus showed these two men how the entire Bible points to faith in Jesus Christ. This means the Bible does not point us to just moral principles, or laws, or ethics. The Bible points us to a Person. Discuss this question: In your experience, do people grow more fully by just learning about good morals, or by having a deep relationship with someone who embodies and models good morals? #3: Read Luke 24:32. These men experienced a “burning” in their hearts, not just because they heard the Scriptures being taught, but because they understood how all of it points to Jesus. Take a moment to share with one another where you are with the Lord in your relationship with Him. When did you last experience the joy of “burning” for God’s glory and presence? Pray for one another and encourage one another!
