The Trinity (pt 2)

 • Series: The Heart of Our Faith

#1: The Trinity and the Bible The Bible resoundingly affirms that God is both singular and plural at the same time: He is one, and yet three – a Tri-Unity or Trinity. The three divine Persons of the Trinity are the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. All of Scripture reveals God this way. #2: The Trinity and Church History In the early church when false teachers distorted Christianity, they often distorted the Trinity. This is not surprising because the doctrine of the Trinity is what ultimately distinguishes Christians from all other religions and worldviews. Faithful Christians in the early church sought to defend Scripture from the distortions of false teachers, and that is why we have some precious creeds like the Apostles’ Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the Chalcedonian Creed. #3: The Trinity and Love The Bible tells us that God is love (1 John 4:8). It makes sense to say that God loves or that God is loving, but how can God be love. The answer: The Trinity. God is a perfect community of eternal love within Himself. Without the Trinity, God could not be the very essence of love. God is love precisely because He is a Trinity. Therefore, without the Trinity, there is no Gospel. Sample Questions for GCs: Read Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:26. The first chapter of the Bible tells us that God is both singular and plural. Discuss these 2 questions: If God was only singular, why would that make it impossible for God to be love? If God was only plural, how would that undermine the claims of Jesus to be God? Read John 17:24-26. God’s love for us is nothing short of astounding. Do you ever take time to meditate on the depth and richness of God’s love for you? How do you think it would change your life if you took more time to meditate on God’s Triune love for you?
