God the Son (pt 4)

 • Series: The Heart of Our Faith

#1: Identity (John 1:1-5, 14) The Bible tells us that Jesus is the “Word.” In the Greek, this word is “logos,” and this is where we get our word “logic.” So literally, Jesus is the logic of the universe. He is the one who makes sense of all reality. He is the Word who was “with God,” and “is God.” We see both the singularity and plurality of God, the Trinity. #2: Essence (Hebrews 1:1-3) Jesus is the radiance of God’s glory and the “exact expression” of God the Father. Jesus is not just a signpost that points us to the Father, nor is He merely a guide who takes us to the Father. Jesus is the exact expression of the Father. He is the way, the truth, and the life because He is literally God in the flesh. #3: Power (Colossians 1:15-22) The power of Jesus is immensely overwhelming! Jesus is first in everything. This isn’t just a nice idea – it’s absolute reality. When we don’t make Jesus first, we’re not just living differently; we’re living foolishly. Jesus is not someone we ask to be our assistant. #4: Provision (2 Corinthians 5:21) God saves us through Jesus Christ by making Christ sin so that we could become the righteousness of God. In other words, Jesus became ugly so we could be made beautiful. He became the curse so we could receive the blessing. #5: Peace (Philippians 4:4-7) This passage is a case study on peace. How do we know if we are people of peace? Paul shows us. When we have peace, we rejoice in all things. We are gracious toward others. We don’t worry, but instead have a rich prayer life. Peace comes from drinking living water from Jesus Christ, who says streams of living water can flow from within us. Sample Questions for GCs: #1: In John 7:37-38 Jesus says that streams of living water can flow from deep within us, from the inside to the outside – not from the outside to the inside. However, we so often believe that our peace is dependent on our outside circumstances. Jesus says it’s not. He says our peace is dependent on what’s going on in our hearts. When are you tempted to believe that your peace is driven by your circumstances? #2: According to the author of Hebrews, Jesus is the exact expression of God the Father’s nature. He isn’t just a guide to the Father – He is the exact expression of God. How does this help you understand what it means that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life? #3: Read Philippians 4:4-7. Are you a person of peace, based on how Paul describes it here?
