The Attributes of God (pt 6)
• Series: The Heart of Our Faith
#1: God’s Glory Biblically speaking, the glory of God is the magnificence of all His attributes put together. God is glorious because He is perfect in all ways and needs no improvement, revision, or change of any kind. #2: God’s Humility Bible commentators have long noticed that Jesus has a stunning lack of modesty paired with incredible humility. Jesus was immodest: He received worship, He called Himself the “I Am,” which is the name for God in the Old Testament. Jesus made enormous claims about Himself. But – Jesus was incredibly humble. He made Himself last. He dedicated His life to serving. #3: God’s Boldness God is not only humble, but also very bold. Many people opposed Jesus: the powerful, the religious leaders, his own family, his friends. They opposed Jesus because He never made obedience to God secondary. For Jesus, obeying God was always primary, and people opposed Him because of that. We can experience the boldness of God in Scripture. When we see ourselves in light of who Jesus is, we see who we really are – and it’s not a flattering image. #4: God’s Love The love of God is not a sentimental feeling of acceptance or warmth. It’s stronger, deeper, and more transforming. We experience the love of God through His glory which awes us, His humility that melts us, and His boldness that humbles us. Our glorious God is humble enough to serve us and bold enough to speak truth to us, and that’s because He loves us! Sample Questions for GCs: Consider the following list of some of God’s attributes. Pick out three that stick out to you as especially meaningful in this season of your life. Share why you chose those three. God is… Eternal, self-sufficient, self-sustaining, self-existing, immutable (never-changing), omnipotent (all-powerful), omniscient (all-knowing), omnipresent (all-seeing), perfectly wise, unceasingly faithful, completely good, absolutely just, compassionately merciful, utterly holy. Jesus is the most humble person who has ever lived. He is a servant who delights in pouring Himself out for others. This is how God feels about you. Is it hard for you to accept that? Why or why not? Jesus is the boldest person who has ever lived. He loves us enough to go toe-to-toe with us. He speaks the truth to us. Jesus always makes obeying God the first priority. When you compare the Person of Jesus to yourself – what conclusions do you draw? How does this humble you?
